Bangalore alone needs around 1000 units of blood per day on average. Those who had to frantically run around searching for blood donors, who could save their loved ones would know the difficulty when hospitals don’t have a constant stock of blood. The only way to ensure a constant supply of safe blood is through voluntary donations. Sankalp India Foundation, an NGO working actively for blood donation says that if just 2% more of India's population donated blood voluntarily, hospitals would not need to ask you for replacement blood when you purchase blood from them.
We wouldn't really want to call it 'donation'. It's a rescue. You're giving your blood to save a person.
